Tips for Planning a Trip in Your RV

Tips for Planning a Trip in Your RV

  • Before a long trip, have your RV inspected before you leave. An inspection by a professional mechanic is very important for long-distance trips. Make sure that your vehicle insurance is current and having roadside assistance is a plus.

  • Decide where you want to go. Even if you have a destination in mind, you may want to make a few stops along the way. Be spontaneous, that is part of the fun of traveling by RV. Have plenty of maps and some type of GPS to minimize the possibility of getting lost on the way to your destination.  Notify trusted friends or family members where you will be going, when and for how long, for safety reasons.

  • Do you need reservations for your destination? Make them. Will you need tickets for any sporting, recreational or cultural events at your destination? If so, buy the tickets ahead of time. Do you plan to stay at a motel/hotel or sleep in your RV? Both options may require the making of reservations. If you plan to campout in your RV, you will want to research RV parks or public campgrounds that are equipped to handle your vehicle. However, if you have a solar power installation, that should not be a concern.

  • Do a supply checkup. Walk through your RV to spark your memory. Look in the kitchen area. What items will you need to prepare beverages and meals? What about the toilet area?  Be sure to bring your meds and sanitary goods. Inventory what you have at hand and make a list of what you may need to buy for your journey before you depart.
  • With the above issues sorted, remember that the purpose of your trip is to have fun. Plan ahead to minimize stress.
